Family and early life

Bündchen was born in the Brazilian town of Três de Maio and grew up in Horizontina,Rio Grande do Sul, to Vânia Nonnenmacher, a bank clerk pensioner, and Valdir Bündchen, a university teacher and writer. She has five sisters — Raquel, Graziela, Gabriela, Rafaela and her fraternal twin Patrícia, Gisele's junior by five minutes.8Bündchen is Roman Catholic and speaks Portuguese as her native language. She also speaks Spanish and English9

I was born in Horizontina, a town in the backcountry of (Brazilian) state Rio Grande do Sul. The town was once mainly colonized by Germans. In the school which I attended, learning German was actually obligatory from third grade on. But being out of touch with the language for such a long time, I unfortunately forgot it. [...] I belong to the sixth generation of my family in Brazil.10

Modeling career

Originally, Bündchen wanted to be a professional volleyball player and considered playing for the Brazilian team, Sogipa. While in school, Bündchen was so thin that her friends used to call her "Olívia Palito" (Portuguese for Olive Oyl, Popeye's skinny girlfriend) and "Saracura" (a type of Brazilian shorebird).

In 1993, a then-13-year-old Bündchen joined a modeling course with her sisters Patrícia and Gabriela at her mother's insistence.11 The following year, Bündchen went to São Paulo on a school excursion to give them an opportunity to walk in a big city. In a shopping mall, while eating at McDonald's with her friends, Bündchen was discovered by a modeling agency. She was subsequently selected for a national contest, Elite Look of the Year, in which she placed second — Claudia Menezes, fromBahia, took first place. Bündchen placed fourth in the world contest, held in Ibiza, Spain. In 1996, Bündchen moved to New York City to begin her modeling career, debuting at Fashion Week.

Her debut on the cover of the July 1999 issue of Vogue magazine, and the accompanying editorial entitled "The Return of the Sexy Model", is widely viewedcitation needed as marking the end of the fashion's "heroin chic" era. She graced the cover again in November and December of that year. She won the VH1/VogueModel of the Year for 1999, and a January 2000 cover gave her the rare honor of three consecutive Vogue covers. In 2000, she became the fourth model to appear on the cover of the music magazine Rolling Stone, when she was named "the most beautiful girl in the world."Bündchen has been on the covers of many top fashion magazines including WHarper's BazaarELLEAllure, international editions of Vogue, as well as style and lifestyle publications such as i-D, The FaceArenaCitizen K,FlairGQEsquire, and Marie Claire. She has been featured both in the Pirelli Calendar 2001 and 2006 and in broader market publications such as TimeVanity FairForbesNewsweek and Veja, more than 500 magazine covers throughout the world.

Bündchen consistently works with acclaimed photographers such as Mario Testino,Steven Meisel, Nick Knight, Mert and Marcus, Rankin, Annie Leibovitz, Karl Lagerfeld,Peter Lindbergh, David LaChapelle, Mario Sorrenti, Nino Munoz and Patrick Demarchelier, and with renowned directors such as Jean Baptiste Mondino and Bruno Aveillan.

Claudia Schiffer said: "Supermodels, like we once were, don't exist any more" and reckoned that Gisele Bündchen was the only one close to earning the supermodel title.

Naomi Campbell said: "Models need to earn their stripes - I just think the term is used a little too loosely. Kate Moss is obviously a supermodel but, after Gisele, I don’t think there’s been one."

On August 26, 2008, the New York Daily News, in a list, named Bündchen the fourth-most-powerful person in the fashion world.

On May 12, 2009, The Independent, called her the biggest star in fashion history.

Endorsements and earnings

Since her debut, Bündchen has been the face of a variety of advertising campaigns including several seasons of Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Mervyn's, Dolce & Gabbana,Missoni, Versace, Givenchy, Bvlgari, Lanvin, Guerlain, Valentino, Ralph Lauren, Earl Jean, Zara, Chloé, Michael Kors, Louis Vuitton and Victoria's Secret. She has appeared in advertisements for Nivea lotion and is the face of several Brazilian brands including Vivo, Multiplan (Shopping Malls), Colcci, Credicard (Citibank) and Volkswagen do Brasil. She has her own line of sandals with footwear company Grendene called Ipanema Gisele BündchenForbes puts her 53rd on their list of the most powerful celebrities of 2007 because of the international success of her shoe line, making the brandIpanema the most sold Brazilian flip-flop in the world, surpassing the legendaryHavaianas. Custom Ipanema flip-flops sell for as much as $230 a pair. She is also the owner of a hotel in the south of Brazil, the Palladium Executive.

On May 1, 2007, it was announced that Bündchen had ended her contract with Victoria's Secret.

In July 2007, having earned an estimated total of $33 million in the past 12 months,Forbes magazine named her the world's top-earning model in the list of the World's 15 Top-Earning Supermodels.

An American economist named Fred Fuld developed a stock index to measure the profit performance improvement of companies represented by Bündchen compared with the Dow Jones Industrial Average. According to Fuld, the Gisele Bündchen Stock Index was up 15% between May and July 2007, substantially surpassing the Dow Jones Industrial Average which was up just 8.2%.

Other ventures

Charity activities

Bündchen lends her support and image to a number of charities and humanitarian causes, such as the I am African campaign, in which she painted her face to protest against the lack of attention given to Africa's HIV/AIDS victims. Without receiving payment, Bündchen was, in 2006, the face of American Express Red Card, an initiative launched by U2 front man Bono and Bobby Shriver to send a percentage of monies earned from the financial transactions of this credit card to Africa's HIV/AIDS victims.

In 2009, she appeared almost simultaneously in more than 20 covers of the international issues of Elle magazines wearing (Product) Red clothing and posing with products from companies who support the same cause. (RED)’s primary objective is to engage the private sector in increasing assistance for the Global Fund, to help defeat AIDS in Africa. Companies whose products take on the mark contribute a percentage of the sales or portion of the profits from that product to the Global Fund to finance AIDS programs in Africa, with special attention on the health of women and children.3031

In 2003, Bündchen designed an exclusive and limited edition of platinum hearts, working with Platinum Guild International and Harper’s Bazaar, crafted by jewelers Gumuchian Fils. These platinum hearts were sold to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital which specializes in cancer treatment. She served as the spokesperson and campaign model for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer.Bündchen already gave a São Paulo Fashion Week's payment check for Zero Hunger(in Portuguese: Fome Zero), a Brazilian-government program introduced by Brazilianpresident Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also in 2003.

She was, in 2009, one of the celebrities to sign up for the auction fundraiser of celebrities autographed iPods to raise cash for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, organised by Tonic.com., alongside former U.S.A.'s president Bill Clinton, Cher,Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Ellen DeGeneres and others. The money is for the Music Rising institution which aims to recover and invest in the musical culture of the destroyed areas.

She promotes protecting the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and Amazon Rainforest water sources, donating to this cause a percentage of profits from her line of sandals named Ipanema Gisele Bündchen. Also, Bündchen helps projects such as Nascentes do BrasilISAY Ikatu Xingu and De Olho nos Mananciais.

Bündchen and Grendene, the company that produces and disseminates her line of sandals, also joined the Florestas do Futuro project for the reforestation of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The project was created by the NGO named SOS Atlantic Forest in 2004. The new forest, named for Gisele Bündchen Sementes, started with 25,500 shoots of 100 different species, enough to revitalize an area of 15 hectares.

On 20 September, 2009, she was designated Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Acting career

In 2004, Bündchen entered the film industry, playing the bank robbers' leader, Vanessa, in the 2004 remake Taxi. In 2006, she played a minor character in The Devil Wears Prada.

Personal life

Relationships

On Thursday, February 26, 2009, Bündchen married New England Patriotsquarterback Tom Brady in a small Catholic ceremony in Los Angeles. On April 5, 2009, the couple remarried in Costa Rica with Brady's son, John Edward Thomas Moynahan, present. For the ceremony, Gisele wore a dress and veil designed by famed fashion designer John Galliano. Bundchen's three dogs were also present at the ceremony. Bündchen and Brady had been dating since late 2006. Before marrying him, she dated actor Leonardo DiCaprio and professional surfer Kelly Slater. On Friday, June 19 2009, People magazine reported that Gisele was pregnant with her first child with husband Tom Brady. The baby is due on December 14, 2009.

Song tribute

As an homage to Bündchen, Brazilian singer and songwriter Gabriel Guerra, along with musician Pedro Cezar, wrote the song Tributo a Gisele (Tribute to Gisele in English),44 which is currently the theme of the model's official website. In January 2008, Bündchen met Gabriel Guerra at Copacabana Palace Hotel in Rio de Janeiro.45

One reason to love New York

In the December 2005 issue, New York magazine chose and publicized a list of 123 reasons to love New York City with reason number 43 being that Gisele Bündchen lives there.46

Nude photographs

On April 11, 2008, a black-and-white photo of Bündchen, shot by Irving Penn, was auctioned for US$193,000 (£96,000). The picture was one of dozens from the collection of Gert Elfering that were sold at Christie's International in New York. In all, the auction tallied US$4.27 million and included pictures of Brigitte Bardot, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Carla Bruni. Bündchen's picture reached the highest price in comparison with the others. Bardot was the second with US$181,000 (£90,000).

In 2009, Gisele featured, on artistic nude picture, the cover of the work retrospective book of Australian photographer Russell James.

Image inspiration

In 2006, Elle magazine bosses surveyed the American leading stylists and asked them to name the star whose hair is a favourite for their clients. More than 50 per cent gave Gisele the title of best hair in Hollywood, followed by Sienna Miller in at second place and Nicole Richie in at third position.50

In February 2008, a result of research was publicized by The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) to reveal how world celebrity images, which overwhelm popular media, influence people's choices and decisions to undergo plastic surgery. The question asked was "What influences do celebrities have on the decisions patients make?". The survey was sent to more than 20,000 plastic surgeons in 84 countries. Gisele Bündchen, Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Pamela Anderson, Sophia Loren, Brad Pitt and George Clooney were the most frequently mentioned celebrities. Gisele won the abdomen and hair categories and took second place in the breasts category.

Exclusive profile of hot n sexy Charlize Theron

Birthday:  August 7, 1975
Age:  34
Sign:  Leo
Birthplace:  Benoni, South Africa
Hometown:  Los Angeles, CA
Big Break:
"Best Actress" Oscar for Monster

BIOGRAPHY

South African actress Charlize Theron made Oscar and Golden Globe-worthy impressions with heavy-hitting dramatic roles which often saw her struggling to survive oppressive environments. Therons own experiences surviving the strife of an unstable childhood home gave her a strong perspective, as did the strong-willed independence that inspired her to head to Europe and begin a professional modeling career while she was still a teenager. But if the 510 blonde was misdiagnosed as merely an actress-turned-model for her early supporting roles, that persona was shattered with a pair of Oscar-nominated starring performances in Monster (2003) and North Country (2005); both portraits of two women who came to deal with second-class citizen status in very different ways.

Charlize Theron was born on Aug. 7, 1975, and raised on a farm outside of Johannesburg, South Africa. In addition to English, she grew up speaking the Afrikaans language of her parents and over a dozen local dialects she learned from employees of the farm and her fathers road construction company. An only child, Theron was and outdoorsy and adventurous kid who did her part taking care of the familys animals and farm chores. But she was also a natural born entertainer, encouraged by her ever-supportive mother to begin dance training at the age of six. When she was 12, Theron left home to attend an arts-oriented private school in Johannesburg where she joined the rigorous dance training program. The tall, lithe preteen had shown a great deal of promise as a dancer, but the move was also intended on her mothers part to remove Theron from an increasingly difficult home life with an alcoholic father. While home on a school break during 1991, Therons parents erupted into a domestic dispute that ended in gunfire and the death of Therons father. Mother Gerda had fired in self-defense from her attacking husband, and was not charged with any wrongdoing. The incident intensified the mother-daughter bond even more.

The shaken teen returned to boarding school and her mother, who was now managing the duties of the family construction business, encouraged her daughter to enter a modeling contest in Johannesburg. After earning top prize, Theron was flown to Italy to represent her country in another contest. She was signed to an agency and promptly quit school to travel Europe as a runway and advertising model. She was advised that she was a contender for runway supermodel if she wanted to slim down to the eras hot heroin chic weight, but Theron was merely interested in making some money to finance a career in dance. Modeling did indeed take her to New York City, where she remained even after her modeling contract ended. It was there that she began dance training with the renowned Joffrey Ballet. In less than a year, though, the 19-year-old suffered a serious knee injury that, sadly, made her dance career an impossibility. Instead, she retreated to the warm weather of Miami, FL, earning some more money modeling before opting to move to Los Angeles and try to break into movies as an actress.

Therons "Hollywood discovery" story rivaled that of Lana Turner's legendary scouting at Schwab's drugstore, with the soon to be it girl attracting the attention of talent manager John Crosby during a tour de force hissy fit thrown in a bank when a teller refused to cash her out-of-state check. Crosby introduced Theron to casting directors and got her into acting classes, as there was a pretty thick accent to contend with. In mere months, she made her grand Hollywood entrance with a three-second, non-speaking role in the direct-to-video feature Children of the Corn III (1995). It may not have seemed like it at the time, but Lady Luck was smiling on her when she subsequently lost the lead in the disastrous "Showgirls" (1995) to Elizabeth Berkley. Instead, she was well on her way to establishing a memorable screen presence with a role as a sexy, cat-suited Norwegian hit woman going toe-to-toe with Teri Hatcherand titillating fellow assassin James Spader in John Herzfeld's "2 Days in the Valley" (1996). The unknown actresss scantily clad, gun-toting image stared down from billboards and imprinted itself on the studio mindset, even if her name did not yet register.

Offers poured in for Theron to essentially play that icy sex kitten again, but she demurred, further displaying her versatility with an about-face as the prissy marriage-minded girlfriend of a drummer (Tom Everett Scott) in Tom Hanks' directorial debut, "That Thing You Do!" (1996). She earned a blush from Hanks during her audition when she confessed she had had a crush on the actor since seeing "Splash" at the age of nine. Adorable in her comic role as a waitress who catches Jeff Daniels' eye in Jonathan Lynn's "Trial and Error" (1997), Theron really impressed with her deglamorized turn as Keanu Reeves' brunette wife in Taylor Hackford's thriller "The Devil's Advocate" (1997). Fighting hard against the stereotyping of her as too beautiful for the part, she more than held her own against Al Pacino and Reeves most obviously with her impressive onscreen breakdown that landed her character in the loony bin.

Woody Allen gave Theron the chance to spoof her modeling experience as the oversexed supermodel of "Celebrity" (1998), before she had the honor of returning to her homeland to star as an orphaned African girl who grows up with an orphaned gorilla in Disneys well-crafted remake of "Mighty Joe Young" (1998). Once again convincingly maneuvering through a wide range of emotions, Theron was right on the money with her mixture of strong-willed resilience and moist-eyed vulnerability as "The Astronaut's Wife" (1999), an extraterrestrial spin on "Rosemary's Baby" which disappeared quickly, due to its predictability and lackluster promotion by the studio. The flames of her instant career continued to burn bright with an impressive portrayal of a young woman tempted by desire while her soldier boyfriend is away at the war in "The Cider House Rules" (1999). The Lasse Hallstrom film was one of the years critical and audience favorites, and Theron was glad that he and screenwriter John Irving had not made her character overly sympathetic. She next endured freezing conditions and even took on some stunt work for John Frankenheimer's "Reindeer Games" (1999), playing a restless Midwestern woman whose sexual dalliance with an ex-con (Ben Affleck) inadvertently leads him back to a life of crime.

Directors showed faith in Therons talent by continually casting her opposite A-list actors, even if the roles she was given were sometimes of the underdeveloped girlfriend variety. In 2000, she played a heroin-addict with a habit for ex-cons (Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix) in "The Yards." She went on to appear in "Men of Honor" (2000) as the wife of a tough-as-nails military man (Robert De Niro). A larger role in another male-centric film Robert Redfords "The Legend of Bagger Vance" (2000) saw the actress as the mobilizing force of a golf tournament in 1930s Georgia. Theron finally took center screen as a terminally ill woman looking for love in Sweet November (2001), but unfortunately her pairing with Keanu Reeves in the heavy-handed romantic drama earned only Razzie Awards. With Woody Allens Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001), Theron showcased her comic timing as an opium-smoking Hollywood diva, but the film was generally panned, as was the chilling drama "Trapped" (2002) in which she played a kidnap victim alongside Stuart Townsend, with whom she would begin a long-term relationship.

In 2003, Theron was effective in an otherwise stock role of sexy, icy babe, in F. Gary Gray's slick remake of the 1969 heist classic "The Italian Job, but her performance was soon forgotten in the shadow of her Oscar and Golden Globe-winning portrayal of convicted murderer Aileen Wuornos, one of America's first known female serial killers, in "Monster" (2003). Therons glamming-down and bulking-up were only part of the actresss stunning transformation into the highly intense Wuornos she also dug deep into her own emotional history to relive the pain of an abusive background. Theron received nearly universal praise and landed on most critics' short lists for the best actress of the year. She followed up her performance with the low-profile wartime melodrama "Head in the Clouds" (2004), before earning an Emmy nomination for portraying actor Peter Sellers one-time wife Britt Ekland in the HBO biopic, "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers" (2004), starring Geoffrey Rush.

The following year she turned out another powerhouse dramatic triumph in "North Country" (2005), which was inspired by the true events surrounding the first ever class action sexual harassment suit against a corporation. Theron starred as an abused, single mother of two who finds pride and economic freedom as a miner, only to experience the constant humiliation of sexual harassment on the job. She earned nominations from the Golden Globes and Academy Awards, even though some detractors bemoaned that director Nikki Caro never quite transcended the realm of a high quality cable telepic.

Therons apt reputation for empowered women led her to accept the sci-fi heroine role in a live-action adaptation of the edgy "Aeon Flux" (2005). The film did moderately well at the box office but failed to excite critics or transform the actresss image into that of aJennifer Garner-styled action heroine. She did keep pushing the boundaries of her image however, with a recurring role on the critically-lauded comedy Arrested Development (Fox, 2003-06), playing a British schoolteacher who catches the eye of Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman). In 2007, she co-starred in a pair of politically-tinged dramas Stuart Townsends little-seen directorial debut Battle in Seattle (2007), a fictionalized account of 1999 protests of the World Trade Organization, and In The Valley of Elah (2007), an Iraq war study that earned star Tommy Lee Jones an Academy nomination for Best Actor, even if the film was criticized for it simplified approach to a number of complex situations. Theron was solid as a detective investigating a military crime, but as with Battle in Seattle, the film received only limited release.

Theron again received critical praise for playing an abandoning mother in the bleak family drama Sleepwalking (2008), but the Sundance-screened indie received overall negative reviews. She was slated to return to the big-screen in the summer of 2008 in an anticipated summer hit, the Will Smith starring vehicle, Hancock (2008), in which she would play the love interest of a failed superhero attempting to make a comeback.
